CAPHN Executive Board Meeting

Minutes of August 14, 2007

Present: Andrea Lombard, Kathy Cooper-McDermott, Deborah Horvath, Barbara Dingfelder, Linda Bailey, Lynn Abrahamson, Sharon J Enot, and Margaret Balint

Lynn Abrahamson called the meeting to order at 8:50 AM .  No formal review of the minutes of the last meeting ( March 13, 2007 )

Treasurer’s Report:  The present balance is $4007.29.  We have received dues from 5 renewals of membership since our annual meeting ( May 3, 2007 ).

President’s Report:  We have received a letter of resignation from Beth Strimpel.  As she is moving out of state she can no longer participate in CAPHN activities.  Her resignation leaves a Member-at-Large position open on the Executive Board.

Lynn also reported on the CPHA Meeting in October (see new business)

Lynn offered congratulations from all of us to Barbara Dingfelder APRN, BSN, MPH , CHES in being named the Connecticut Department of Public Health Nurse of the Year May 8, 2007.

Committee Reports:

Membership:  Margaret reviewed arrangements made with Virginia to keep track of those who renew and new members.  After the annual meeting, Virginia generates an email that goes out reminding those who have not renewed their membership inviting them to do so.  During the summer months a letter is sent by mail to those who have not yet renewed or who has had their email returned as undeliverable.   In the fall, the membership committee will call those who have not renewed inquiring why.  Virginia will email a copy of current membership monthly in June and July and then as requested.  Virginia will email the membership chair/s of any new renewals or new members as they occur, starting in August.

Discussion occurred and a policy will be piloted.   The goal is to reach out to new members.  Nurses returning or renewing their membership will receive a letter that will include a membership card valid for the year (May 1st to April 30th the following year).  Each new member will receive a letter of welcome with a membership card enclosed.  They will also receive a telephone call from a member of the membership committee or the Executive Board to welcome them, and attempt to support them in their public health nursing role (mentoring them if necessary).  Also during this phone call, we will ask them to join one of our subcommittees.

As Margaret has been elected secretary for CAPHN, the Membership Committee chair is presently Heather Henning.  A new co-chair can be appointed by the President.  Lynn will make inquiries as to who might be willing to fill this vacancy.  Lynn thanked Margaret for hard work on the Membership Committee over the years.

Education Committee:  Debbye Rosen has stepped down as co-chair of the education committee.  Monica Farina remains as the chairperson.  As one of the functions of the Vice President of CAPHN, Andrea coordinates program for all meetings.  The Education Committee and Andrea work closely together.  Andrea made the suggestion that each of the committee members be assigned to take the lead on one educational meeting a year.  Debbye Rosen has been handling the meetings about Influenza both the Update in the fall and the Roundtable in the spring.  Hopefully she will continue to do this.  Monica Farina has coordinated the annual meeting.  Again, hopefully, she will agree to be the lead on this meeting again this year.  That leaves 2 more quarterly meetings.  Discussion ensued on what other topics would be of interest and would fit into these meeting.  The three most prominent ideas were the new lead requirements from DPH , food safety issues and how to be an advocate.  Linda Bailey said she would check into an environmental health and nursing program done by someone at the University of Hartford .

Finance Committee: No report.  See Treasurer’s report.

Nursing Practice Committee:  See upcoming CT Department of Public Health event in Additional Activities.

Website Committee:  Kathleen Cooper-McDermott and Deborah Horvath agreed to work with our current webmaster and member Eileen Boulay. They are charged with reviewing our website, identifying needs and priorities.  They will also contact website management companies and review how they can respond to these needs and priorities.  Recommendations shall be made to the President and the Executive Board.  The gatekeeper for the website has been and will continue to be the current Secretary.

Old Business:  We will request a meeting with Phil Griener and Judy Sartucci to review their recommendations for updating the Bylaws of the organization.

New Business: On September 26, 2007 , CT Department of Public Health’s Virtual Office of Public Health Nursing will conduct a meeting entitled “Public Health Nursing and Building Bridges in Connecticut .”  It will be held from 9 AM to 12 PM .  The meeting place is to be announced.  The “Save the Date” flyer has been sent. For further information, contact Barbara Dingfelder (860-509-7660 or barbara.dingfelder@ct.gov)

On October 26, 2007 the Connecticut Public Health Association is holding its annual meeting, “Looking over the Horizon: Emerging Issues for the Public health Workforce.”  It will be held at Aqua Turf in Southington .  A portion of the meeting will be addressing the need in public health nursing.  That portion of the meeting be titled “Raising the Bar:  Strategies to Grow Public health Nursing.  The featured speaker is Kristine Gebbe, RN. This portion will be from 10:30 to 11:45 AM .  All are encouraged to attend.  For more information contact Lynn Abrahamson at lynnabrahamson@ci.bristol.ct.us.

September 18, 2007 the Connecticut Influenza and Pneumococcal Coalition will be holding its annual Influenza Update at Amarante’s Sea Cliff, 62 Cove St , New Haven CT.   The time is 8:30 to 3:30 PM .  Contact person is Pamela Slodzinski Nixon (800-LUNG USA ).  Registration is online at LUNGCT.org

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 AM .
