Our Mission

Our mission at CAPHN, Inc. is to provide expertise in areas of public health through leadership, advocacy, education, collaboration and nursing practice.

Our History

The Connecticut Association of Public Health Nurses (CAPHN), completed its first official year of existence in June 2003. To mark this first anniversary, a plaque was presented to Polly Barry, a representative of the CT Nurses Association, who accepted the plaque for the association. The plaque was given in recognition of the support the CT Nurses Association has given to CAPHN, Inc. in the continued development of the association.

Highlights for our first year included:

  • Establishment of the CAPHN web page for general and membership information.

  • Strategic planning efforts expect to be completed by the end of 2003.

  • Initial completion of 501-C3 applications.

  • Distribution of updated health alerts and information from the State Dept. of Public Health through the Health Alert Network.

  • Electronic mail was instituted as an effective means of communication to members for sharing and receiving information about the association's activities, the latest health information, and information requests related to public health nursing issues, at local, state, and national levels.

  • CAPHN membership includes: local and state public health nurses, along with academic public health nursing representatives.

Specific activities sponsored by the education committee this year included:

  • "CT’s Public Health Capacity Against Bioterrorism: An Update", featuring CT’s local public health's nurses experience with anthrax.

  • Two network meetings were held with Statewide representation to discuss relevant public health nursing issues.

  • Our annual meeting address, highlighted the current status of public health nursing, and  was presented by Phil Greiner, RN, Ph.D, of Fairfield University.  Dr Greiner is an Associate Professor at Fairfield University School of Nursing, Director of the Health Promotion Center in Fairfield, and Immediate Past President of American Public Health Association (APHA); nursing section.

  • CAPHN is well represented on the Statewide Bioterrorism Preparedness Taskforce with members playing an integral part in CT Bioterrorism Preparedness along with representation in the Yale Partnership for Workforce Development.

  • CAPHN will be planning and implementing related bioterrorism training for public health nurses through the Yale Partnership.

  • Several CAPHN members attended the Massachusetts Public Health Nurse Association's meeting in the Spring, and participated in an informational display and networking activities.
