Our
Mission
Our mission at CAPHN, Inc.
is to provide expertise in areas of public health through
leadership, advocacy, education,
collaboration and nursing practice.
Our History
The Connecticut Association of Public Health Nurses (CAPHN), completed its
first official year of existence in June 2003. To mark this first anniversary, a plaque
was presented to Polly Barry, a representative of the CT Nurses
Association, who accepted the plaque for the association. The plaque was
given in recognition of the
support the CT Nurses Association has given to CAPHN, Inc. in the continued
development of the association.
Highlights for our first year included:

Establishment of the CAPHN web page for
general and membership information.

Strategic planning efforts expect to be
completed by the end of 2003.

Initial completion of 501-C3 applications.

Distribution of updated health alerts and
information from the State Dept. of Public Health through the Health Alert
Network.

Electronic mail was instituted as an
effective means of communication to members for sharing and receiving
information about the association's activities, the latest health information,
and information requests related to public health nursing issues, at local,
state, and national levels.

CAPHN membership includes: local and state public health nurses, along
with academic public health nursing representatives.
Specific activities sponsored by the education committee this year
included:

"CT’s Public Health Capacity Against
Bioterrorism: An Update", featuring CT’s local public health's nurses
experience with anthrax.

Two network meetings were held with
Statewide representation to discuss relevant public health nursing issues.

Our annual meeting address, highlighted the current status of public
health nursing, and was presented by Phil Greiner, RN, Ph.D, of
Fairfield University. Dr Greiner is an Associate Professor at
Fairfield University School of Nursing, Director of the Health Promotion
Center in Fairfield, and Immediate Past President of American Public Health
Association (APHA); nursing section.

CAPHN is well represented on the Statewide Bioterrorism Preparedness
Taskforce with members playing an integral part in CT Bioterrorism
Preparedness along with representation in the Yale Partnership for Workforce
Development.

CAPHN will be planning and implementing related bioterrorism training for
public health nurses through the Yale Partnership.

Several CAPHN members attended the Massachusetts Public Health Nurse
Association's meeting in the Spring, and participated in an informational
display and networking activities.
